Group Health Insurance

What is a group? For purposes of this page, this is referring to an employer group. A health plan contracted by an employer is called an employer-sponsored health plan.

In Colorado, we can write group health insurance on legitimate businesses and organizations from 1 employee (self employed person) up to a group of 50 employees. In Missouri, as in most other states, this is limited to groups of 2-50.

General Requirements

In order to sponsor a health plan, an employer must have a legitimate business, organized properly under the laws of the state and be able to supply evidence of that formation, such as registration certificates, certificates of good standing, affidavits, articles of incorporation, operating agreements for partnerships, tax returns, etc. In addition, all groups must prove that they earn income from the business sufficient to pay the premiums, a general rule of thumb being at least minimum wage for at least 24 hours per week.

A group of 2-50 employees can make an application at any time for insurance.

  • A business group of one (self employed) is more constrained than a larger group in when it can apply for a group health plan:
  • the business must have been in place for at least one year;
  • within 31 days of the birthdate of the primary or on the anniversary date of the business;
  • on a qualifying event, such as the termination of COBRA coverage;
  • the self employed person must be employed in the business for most of the work hours.

Other parameters apply and the applicant should call for more detailed information.
